CUASA Response to OCUA Discussion Paper Sustaining Quality in Changing Times, Funding Ontario Universities' SUMMARY The function of a university in a free society is the dissemination and advancement of knowledge and critical comment on society at large. The premise on which the OCUA discussion paper is based does not offer a model that allows universities to provide this function effectively for Ontario. A simple model for funding and accountability is required. It should be based on consistent public funds, private donations and student tuition. Intrinsic components of the model are the advancement and dissemination of knowledge by means of the unique synergy of teaching, research and scholarship. Also intrinsic is the arms-length relationship of the government. Part of the model must be universal access to university, based on ability. Full-time or Reduced Workload Options for Members About to Reach Sixty-Five In at least one faculty members approaching the age of 65 have been receiving letters from the administrator which fail to point out the options of continuing full-time or on a reduced work-load in accordance with provisions of the Collective Agreement [article 40.8(e)]. We urge members to read that section and know their rights. _______________________________________________________________________________ Betty Weiss Memorial - Award This new award will recognize persons at Carleton University who distinguish themselves in their everyday conduct by caring for and helping others, Members are encouraged to nominate deserving individuals from the Carleton community.
