Volume 25, No. 12 Editor: Bob Rupert February, 1995. Maternity and Parental Leave Entitlement for CUASA Members Maternity Leave _______________ Natural Mothers can receive either twelve weeks at 100% of salary fully paid by the University or seventeen weeks at 95% of salary. In the latter case, the first two weeks are fully paid by the University and the next fifteen comprise UIC benefit topped up by the University. A faculty member who selects the twelve weeks at full pay is eligible, then, to apply for UIC benefits not topped up by the University. The number of weeks of UIC to which the member is entitled will depend on when the faculty member commenced the twelve weeks leave with pay and the date of birth. If granted, there is a two week waiting period. The leave after the twelve weeks would be granted pursuant to Article 20.1 of the collective agreement. During the twelve and seventeen week leaves all benefits and normal premium cost-sharing arrangements continue. Parental Leave ______________ Natural mothers who elect to take seven weeks maternity leave at 95% of salary are entitled to ten additional weeks any time in the twelve months following the birth of the child. If they are eligible of UIC benefit they will receive 95% of salary which comprises the UIC benefit and a top-up from the University. No waiting period is required before the benefits commence. Natural mothers who elect to take twelve weeks at 100% of salary are entitled to 12 more weeks at any time in the twelve months following the birth of the child. If they are eligible for UIC benefits they will receive 95% of salary. The first two weeks are fully paid by the University. The next ten weeks comprise UIC benefits topped up by the University to 95% of salary. Natural fathers and adoptive mothers and fathers are entitled to twelve weeks leave at 95% of salary. The first two weeks are fully paid by the University and for the following ten weeks UIC benefits are topped up by the University. UIC parental leave benefits are payable to either the natural mother or father or adoptive mother or father. The full benefit is not payable to each parent but can be shared. During the twelve and ten-week parental leaves all full benefits continue with normal premium cost-sharing. Powers of Attorney Ontario's laws have been updated by the Substitute Decisions Act. Current law allows you to choose someone to look after your financial affairs if you become mentally incapable. Now, for the first time in Ontario, this new law also gives you the legal authority to plan personal care ahead. The legal way to give someone authority to make decisions for you is by a power of attorney. Under the Act you can choose those you trust to make financial decisions for you and to explain in advance your values and wishes to make difficult decisions easier. Power of attorney is simply a legal document by which one person gives another person authority to make decisions for them if they become mentally incapable. Separate powers of attorney have to be made for financial decisions and personal care. The new law in Ontario has different rules for each. Power of Attorney Kits containing an information booklet, blank power of attorney forms and guidelines are available free from the Access Ontario Office in the Rideau Centre. HOUSING NOTICES CUASA provides a list of housing notices as a service to its members. Notices must be submitted to the CUASA office in writing, either by mail or by fax.
