Volume 26, No. 6 Editor: Mark Langer July, 1995. TIAA-CREF WITHDRAWS ITS BUSINESS FROM CANADA The Canada Gazette (September 30, 1995) published a notice for TIAA and for CREF as follows: RELEASE OF ASSETS: Notice is hereby given, pursuant to section 651 of the Insurance Companies Act, the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America (College Retirement Equities Fund) intends to apply to the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, on or after December 18, 1995, for the release of its assets in Canada. Any policy holder in Canada opposing such release must file notice of such opposition with the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, 255 Albert Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0H2, on or before December 18 1995. Effective January 1, 1996, the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association - College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) will cease doing business in Canada. Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada will assume TIAA-CREF's Canadian insurance and annuity contracts. This change may affect some members and retirees. CAUT is looking into this change and has contacted a pension consultant and is pursuing contacts with an actuary and legal counsel. As there is concern that there is not enough time for all policy holders to have been informed or, if informed, to seek formal advice and review their options, policy holders may wish to write to the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OFSI) asking that the transfer of policies be delayed for a year. Policy holders may also register objections directly with SunLife at 1-800-835-3820 who is required to keep a record of all calls and notify OSFI as to how many objections and how many enquiries have been received. If you are affected by this change please notify CAUT (820-2270; FAX 820-7244; email: CAUT@carleton.ca). CUASA Welcomes Queens as a sister union Following a secret ballot held by the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Queen's University Faculty Association was certified as the bargaining agent for the 924 members of the QUFA bargaining unit. QUFA becomes the 11th certified academic staff association in Ontario; 6 are non-certified organizations. At the request of CAUT, CUASA was pleased to provide assistance through the services of its Business Agent, Pat Finn, for two days in August during the certification drive. CORRECTION The CUASA Communique (Volume 26, No.3) incorrectly identified the pension contribution holiday at 6%. It should have read 2.5% for April 1/95 to March 31/96 and 2.5% for April 1/96 to March 1/97. The stated dollar amounts of $2,600,000 are correct.
