Vol. 27, No. 1 - August, 1996 CUPE 2424 NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE CUPE 2424 has filed for conciliation with the Ministry of Labour following a July 25 final offer from the Employer. The final offer demands major benefits concessions through reduction of coverage and through cost-sharing arrangements. Protection for 24 24 members against the effects of contracting out would be significantly reduced. Management also proposed three days of unpaid leave over the Christmas break. CUPE 2424 calculates that management's proposal would result in compensation reductions rangi ng from 7.35% to 6.19% (with the greatest cutbacks borne by the lowest paid) and in further erosion of job security. If conciliation results in a "no board report" a strike or lock- out could occur within seventeen days of the report. In keeping with this, CUPE 2424 held a Strike Mandate Vote at an information meeting Friday, August 2. The Strike Mandate Vote passed a lmost unanimously. CUASA ON THE WEB CUASA now has a web page, making it easier for all of our members to access information. Simply point your web browser to: http://www.carleton.ca/~pfinn/ Among the things available on the website are the CUASA Collective Agreement, the CUASA Constitution, the Benefits Booklet, and housing listings. There are also links to other faculty associations, national academic associations, federal and provincial government sites of interest, as well as other sites related to academic staff. CUASA Calendar The CUASA Calendar should be in everyone's mailbox. Please remember to pick them up, as these Calendars have a tendency to disappear. As in years past, if you do not need the calendar please fell free to return it to the CUASA office. There are several small problems with this year's calendar. During collation, the first two pages were reversed, so that September 1996 is at the back of the calendar and August 1997 is at the front. Also, the week of January 13-19, 1996 has been misnumbered. We apologize for both of these errors. Housing Notices CUASA provides a list of housing notices as a service to its members. Notices must be submitted to the CUASA office in writing, either by mail, by fax or by email. Housing notices will not be accepted over the phone. CUASA cannot guarantee the placement of notices.
