Update on Discussions re. Collective Bargaining

We wish to inform our members that the University has invited CUASA to hold a type of pre-bargaining form of negotiations to determine the best way forward for this round of collective bargaining. To date, neither party has served a notice to bargain thereby triggering the “traditional” first step for collective bargaining between the parties. Although such pre-bargaining is not uncommon in law it is uncommon for CUASA and the University.

As such, and in accordance with CUASA’s constitution and bylaws, your Council has appointed an emergency negotiation team that consists of the minimum number of required representatives required to create the equivalent of a “mini-team” whose purpose is to properly receive the University’s suggestions, explore options, and make immediate recommendations to both Council and the membership.

Members should be aware that any type of pre-bargaining discussions are still subject to ratification by the membership since their aim ultimately lies in reaching a collective agreement.

On Thursday, your CUASA Council plans to conclude its discussion on how best to approach this next round of collective bargaining.

On Friday at the April General Meeting, members will be provided additional information on the pre-bargaining events of the past week and next steps. Please watch for the upcoming notice, agenda and zoom details for the AGM.
