CUASA employs full-time professional staff who are available to provide assistance and answer your inquiries. You can learn more about them below!

CUASA’s staff, except the Executive Director, are unionized under Unifor Local 567.

  • Jaye Horton
    Jaye Horton Executive Director

    Jaye (he/they) is responsible for the administration of the daily operations of the Association by managing, supervising, and directing the staff team, serving as an advisor, consultant, and resource person to the President, facilitating the coordination of all aspects of CUASA’s mission, ensuring that the constitution, bylaws, and polices of the Association are observed, and overseeing the effective delivery of services to the membership.

    Jaye has been with CUASA since April 2018. They previously served five and a half years as the Member Services & Communications Officer, and most recently simultaneously spent a year and a half as the Interim Director prior to their appointment as ED.

    Jaye is currently enrolled in the Professional Master of Industrial Relations program at Queen’s University. He holds a Master of Arts in Communication from Carleton University, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Communication from Cape Breton University in his hometown of Sydney, NS. They have also completed training in leadership, labour relations, and professional writing for marketing and public relations.

  • Alex Aucoin
    Alex Aucoin Grievance & Arbitration Officer

    Alex assists CUASA with grievances, mediations, arbitrations, and workplace investigations.

    Alex holds a P1 licence from the Law Society of Ontario and he graduated with honours from the paralegal program at Algonquin Careers Academy. He also has a certificate in Human Resources and Labour Relations from Athabasca University, a certificate in Labour Relations from Queen’s University, and a certificate in Labour Law from York University. He is currently completing a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources and Labour Relations from Athabasca University.

  • Brittainy Bonnis
    Brittainy Bonnis Member Services & Communications Officer

    Brittainy (she/they) joined CUASA in July of 2024. As the MSCO, Brittainy’s primary responsibilities include day-to-day services to members, member development, mobilization and organization, and internal and external communications on behalf of the Association.

    Brittainy brings their recent experience as a graduate student union executive and a member of a highly successful bargaining team to their new position. Committed to clear and accessible communications, they look forward to supporting the membership and keeping them and the larger community informed about the work of the Association.

    Brittainy holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Laurentian University, a Master’s Degree in Media Studies from Western, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Culture Studies at Queen’s.

  • Max López
    Max López Equity & Member Services Officer

    Max (he/they) joined CUASA in March of 2022 and their primary role as Equity & Member Services Officer is to work with the Equity Chair in advising, developing, and coordinating initiatives related to anti-racism, social justice, and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA). He is responsible for providing member support and assisting CUASA’s internal committees such as (but not limited to) the Anti-Racism Working Group and the Joint Committee in Employment Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Additionally, he is active in collective bargaining and coordinates with the MSCO with internal and external communications related to equity on behalf of the Association.

    Max holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Human Rights and a Master’s Degree in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies with a minor in Queer Studies.

  • Hanan Mankal
    Hanan Mankal Grievance & Arbitration Officer

    Hanan grew up in Ottawa and moved to the Middle East for a number of years with her family. She comes from a diversified professional background working in the medical field, retail, and the legal field.

    Hanan holds a P1 licence from the Law Society of Ontario, and graduated with excellence from the LSO accredited paralegal program at Algonquin Careers Academy. She has completed training in Labour Relations (Ryerson University/Toronto Metropolitan University), Workplace Mental Health (York University), The Law of Emergencies (York University), Human Resources Law for HR Professionals (York University), and Human Rights Activist (UNIFOR Education Centre).

  • Liala Swayty
    Liala Swayty Office Manager

    As Office Manager, Liala provides administrative support for the administration and operations of the Association, and is also responsible for day-to-day management of the Association’s finances in Consultation with the Treasurer.

    Liala first joined CUASA’s team from 2015 to 2017 as the Records and Space Management Coordinator, and from 2019 to 2022 she served as the Assistant to the Director.

    Liala has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor of Commerce degree, both from the University of Ottawa.

  • Modupe Kowe
    Modupe Kowe Collective Bargaining Support Assistant – Finance

    Modupe graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting from Carleton in 2009. She has 15 years of work experience in Accounting.

    Modupe is a mum of 2. She moved to Canada from Nigeria 20 years ago. She enjoys going for long walks and watching African movies.

  • Mohammed Jahirul Islam
    Mohammed Jahirul Islam Collective Bargaining Support Assistant – Research

    Mohammed Jahirul Islam (he/him) joined CUASA in July 2024. His primary role as Collective Bargaining Support Assistant – Research is to work with the Equity Chair to research disability accommodation and teaching evaluation for Carleton University academic staff and librarians to provide policies for supporting anti-racism, social justice, and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA).

    Mohammed is doing a Ph.D. in Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University on “Prison and Resistance: A Postcolonial Comparative Study on Released Indigenous Women Political Prisoners in Bangladesh and Canada.” He received his Bachelor’s and Master of Social Science (M.S.S) degrees in Sociology from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in 2009. His research interests are Prison Resistance, Indigenous Prison Resistance, Punishment, Prison Governance and Prison Culture, Terrorism and Religious Fundamentalism, and Gender and Female Criminality through postcolonial and poststructuralist lenses. Moreover, he was also a Research Assistant (RA) in different research projects on Prison Transparency, Prison Abolition and Disinformation funded by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Canadian Government and Carleton University.

    Apart from this, Mohammed has been an Associate Professor and former Chairman of the Department of Criminology and Police Science at Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) in Tangail, Bangladesh, since 2010. Before joining the MBSTU faculty, he was employed as a research officer at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has written several research articles on theoretical and historical criminology, philosophy of science, punishment, female criminality, gender issues, enforced disappearance and extra-judicial killing, religious terrorism and fundamentalism. Mohammed is a member and executive leader of many intellectual communities, including the Canadian Law and Society Association (CLSA), Carleton University Law Students Association (CULSA).
