MEDIA ADVISORY: CUASA to announce whether Dr. Root Gorelick will sign Carleton BOG statement

(Ottawa, Ontario-December 10, 2015) On December 14, 2015, the association representing Carleton’s academic staff will announce Dr. Root Gorelick’s decision on whether he will sign the revised Statement of General Duties, Fiduciary Responsibilities, and Conflict of Interest that has led to the recent motion for the Canadian Association for University Teachers to begin an investigation of censure against Carleton University.
This motion was motivated by the decision of Carleton University to have the members of the Carleton University Board of Governors sign a newly revised statement which imposed unprecedented restrictions on a member’s ability to speak publicly about board meetings.

In order to encourage transparency and good governance, CUASA member Dr. Root Gorelick, who is one of 2 elected faculty representatives on the Carleton University Board of Governors, has blogged regularly about open meetings of the Board since 2013. Under the revised statement, Dr. Gorelick is prohibited from continuing to blog about anything discussed by the Board of Governors. As a result, he refused to sign the revised statement, resigned the previous version that did not limit his academic freedom or rights and has been threatened since with possible removal from the Board of Governors.
