Further Secrecy at the Board of Governors
MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA – October 15, 2015 – The Carleton University Academic Staff Association (CUASA) is dismayed at the continued lack of transparency by the Carleton University Board of Governors.
In an open letter to the Board and the Carleton community last month, faculty, staff and students demanded the Board be accountable, diverse, open and responsive to the Carleton community. Despite this, the Board continues to operate under a veil of secrecy with little regard for the community it serves.
The Board has announced its intention to hold a secret, in camera meeting in the first weeks of November. This meeting will be closed to members of the community and to the press. It is just another example of the lack of transparency we have come to expect from our institution.
This additional November meeting is not only unnecessary, given that a regular meeting is already scheduled a short time later, but no public attempt has been made to justify holding the meeting in camera and excluding members of the press and the Carleton community.
“The behavior of the Board of Governors is shameful,” said Friskjen van Veldhoven, CUASA’s President. “It has shown blatant disregard for the Carleton community and for the members that we elected to serve on our behalf. The whole Carleton community deserves better. They deserve an open and transparent Board.”
