It Makes Census: It’s Time to Reinstate the Long Form Census
January 2015
The Canadian Association of University Teachers, along with other public interest groups, has released a joint statement urging the federal government to support Bill C-626 to bring back the long-form Census.
The mandatory long-form census, eliminated in 2011, was a critical source of data and information on population demographics, commuting and working patterns, economic information, and much more. It helped inform public policy, guide researchers, and assisted businesses.
The voluntary National Household Survey that replaced the mandatory Census costs more and provides incomplete data, making it an ineffective replacement.
Members, supporters and allies are encouraged to circulate the joint statement and tweet to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Minister of Industry James Moore to support Bill C-626.
