Afternoon Update – March 30
The University has announced it is introducing a flexible grading option for Winter 2020 courses. Students will have the choice to convert any of their grades to an alternate SAT/UNS (satisfactory/unsatisfactory). Course instructors will submit the earned grades as usual, and students will then have until May 29, to designate the alternate option through the Registrar’s office.
The University has also decided to postpone or cancel all Carleton in person events until June 30, including the postponement of Spring Convocation.
We want to thank members who have been letting us know of their ongoing concerns. We have heard from a number of you who are concerned about tenure/confirmation and promotion timelines. As mentioned previously, we have had discussions with the University on a wide range of topics, including a possible extension of tenure/confirmation and promotion applications. We are meeting with the administration again on Thursday this week and hope to have more information to pass on soon.
OCUFA has issued a statement expressing deep concerns about the equity implications of the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, the statement highlights the unprecedented workload and anxiety levels associated with the immediate move of classes to online platforms, as well as the immense pressure those with elder and childcare responsibilities, the majority of whom are women and single parents, are under to continue with their workload while caring for their loved ones. You can read OCUFA’s full statement here. We consider every protected ground of the Human Rights Code to be essential and we fully recognize that, in terms of family situations, parents of all gender identifications are included in these concerns. CUASA is insisting on continued dialogue with the University to help find safe solutions to issues being faced by all members during these unprecedented times.
We would also like to remind you that tomorrow is the final day to complete the pre-bargaining survey to help with preparations for the 2021 round. If you have not done so already, please take a moment to fill out the survey before 11:59pm tomorrow night. Members can find a link to the survey in their email. Please note that this survey is meant only for CUASA bargaining unit members. We kindly ask that you please not share the link to the survey.
Tomorrow is also the final day to submit nominations for the position of CUASA President for the 2020-2022 term of office. For more information on the nominations and elections process, visit our How to Volunteer page.
