Afternoon Update – March 31

This morning, Carleton President Bacon shared the unfortunate news that a Carleton employee has now been confirmed as a positive case. Out of respect for the individual’s privacy, their identity in not being shared. Carleton Health and Counselling Services will be reaching out today to anyone who may have been near this person in the last 14 days.

As most members of the Carleton Community are now working and studying from home, the University will not be reporting specifically on every case that may follow. The relevant information will be posted on Carleton’s COVID-19 website as needed.

You can stay up-to-date on the latest information from Ottawa Public Health here, the Ontario Ministry of Health here, and the Public Health Agency of Canada here.

We encourage all CUASA members to take care of yourselves and your family. Please remember that you have access to the Employee and Family Assistance Program if you need support. Information on the program can be found here.

The Ministry of Colleges and Universities announced today it has finalized an agreement with eCampusOntario to make digital learning supports available to postsecondary institutions. The Ministry says this will assist colleges and universities with the technology to conduct year-end assessments, while preserving student privacy and the integrity of academic assessment. CUASA is scheduled to meet with the university administration on Thursday, and we will be asking what effects today’s announcement will have on Carleton, particularly given that the University had already previously announced examination procedures that CUASA members have expressed concerns about.

The Ministry also announced it is distributing $25 million in additional funding to colleges and universities to help address each institution’s most pressing needs during COVID-19, such as deep cleaning, purchasing supplies, or offering mental health support.

CAUT has put together a list of frequently asked questions on COVID-19 and the academic workplace. It can be found here.
