Weekly Update – July 31

Note on Updates

Please note there will be no weekly update for next Friday, August 7, to allow for CUASA staff vacations. We will return in two weeks on August 14.

Reminder of New Faculty Orientation

Carleton Teaching and Learning Services is holding the 2020 New Faculty Orientation entirely online. The online orientation consists of two parts, including Q&A sessions to ask questions of representatives from TLS and other departments. New faculty members who will be teaching online or via distance this upcoming academic year are encouraged to attend. The next Q&A session is on Tuesday, August 11 from 2:00-4:00pm. You can learn more and register here. We highly recommend that everyone interested and new to online teaching, including new faculty, attend this workshop if they can. We have heard they are very helpful and well worth attending to assist in your preparations for the fall term.

Equipment Loans for Teaching Online

Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) has acquired equipment to loan to instructors to help develop and teach online courses. Instructors can also request equipment support for their teaching assistants, if the equipment is required as part of assigned TA duties. For more information on available equipment, and how to request a loan, click here.

  • Chair, Internal Affairs
  • Instructor Representative

Information on the nominations process can be found on our How to Volunteer page. The work of the Association continues, despite the current environment we find ourselves in. Remote teaching and technology-facilitated gender-based and sexual violence

The Chair of OCUFA’s Status of Women and Equity Committee (SWEC), Rebecca Godderis, and OCUFA staff members Jordyn Perrault-Laird and Mina Rajabi Paak, have written an article exploring the ways in which technology-facilitated gender-based and sexual violence can occur in online fora. In particular, it looks at remote teaching platforms and how they can be spaces where such forms of violence are inflicted. The article also offers a range of concrete recommendations for faculty, staff and administrators on how to address and prevent technology-based violence as they prepare for remote instruction in fall. Care work during COVID: A letter from home about privilege, resilience, and capitalism in the academy

Dr. Soma Chatterjee, Associate Professor of Social Work at York University, has written a piece offering a valuable analysis on care work during the pandemic. Chatterjee says, “The impacts of COVID-19 will reverberate for years and likely decades to come. The threads of inquiry, not to mention the personal, political, and ethical lessons this tiny virus has revealed, are innumerable”. Read the full article here.
