In this issue:

CUASA in solidarity with CUPE 2424

All members are encouraged to attend a CUPE 2424 solidarity rally on March 2nd at 12:00 noon at the University Centre Galleria.

CUPE 2424 has set a strike date of Monday, March 5th 2018. CUASA stands in solidarity with our CUPE colleagues and supports their negotiating efforts for a fair settlement.

For more detailed information on the status of CUPE 2424 negotiations or job action, please visit cupe2424.ca. Additionally, please read CUASA’s Policy and Advice Statement with respect to Strikes by Members of Another Bargaining Unit.

CUASA encourages members to show support for CUPE 2424 whenever possible and, in the event of a strike, to appropriately accommodate students who may be delayed due to a holdup or participation on the picket lines, or who may have a conscientious objection to crossing a picket line. In the event of a strike, members are especially encouraged to support their colleagues by walking the picket lines during their free time. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather.

CUASA reminds its members that during any job action they should not perform any duties normally performed by members of CUPE 2424. Additionally, if any of the following items are observed or experienced please report them immediately to CUASA at [email protected]; [email protected]; and/or 613-520-2600 ext: 5608:

  • Any attempts to direct, coerce, intimidate or harass CUASA members to perform the work of CUPE 2424 members.
  • Any unsafe practices or workplace conditions. Members on strike are without the protection of a collective agreement. Since CUASA members share workspaces with CUPE 2424, any alterations to the workplace during a strike could be in violation of CUASA’s own collective agreement.
  • Any threats of discipline or breaches of the CUASA collective agreement.

Finally, CUASA reminds its members that they are expected to perform their work as usual (but this does not include work normally performed by any of your colleagues who are members of CUPE 2424). Delays caused by the picket lines at the campus road entrances are expected. Please be respectful. Members scheduled to be on campus during the strike should notify their students and Chairs promptly if the delays being experienced will cause a class to start later than scheduled.
