CUASA Queries: Campus Case Counts

CUASA continues to actively monitor the COVID-19 situation on campus, including any reported cases. The University has set up a web page for reporting active cases on campus, which can be found here.

However, we have noticed that the numbers on this page seem to reset daily. For example, earlier this week the tracker listed 3 active cases, which were confirmed by the Employer, but has since been showing 0 for most days. Yet there is no historical data being made available to report on cumulative active cases versus those deemed recovered, which we have seen that other universities are providing. There is also no data being shared on how many classes have been affected by isolation orders, etc.

We intend to raise this issue with the University administration when we meet next week, and to seek a clearer understanding of the current situation on campus.

Orange Shirt Day

Next Thursday, September 30, we encourage all CUASA members to participate in Orange Shirt Day, which serves to recognize and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada.

The federal government has designated September 30 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, beginning this year. This is in line with the Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action 80, which called for the establishment of a statutory day to “honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process”.

Carleton’s School of Public Policy and Administration will welcome Carleton alumnus Tim O’Loan to speak with the campus community at 1:00pm on September 30. In this presentation, woven with three life changing short videos, Tim O’Loan will share his personal stories, experiences and challenges stemming from his four years with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC). This presentation is meant to educate, enlighten and inspire greater understanding of Indigenous issues and reconciliation. For more information, or to register, click here.

ARWG Newsletter

The CUASA Anti-Racism Working Group (ARWG) is unveiling a new project that weaves together intersectional, multi-disciplinary approaches to engage with anti-oppression pedagogy and action. The tentative title of the project is Provocations & Practice.

The project will include a regular newsletter that will focus on a keyword and explore the multiple ways of understanding and seeing the word in relation to anti-oppression. The newsletter will also include interviews with CUASA members with their thoughts on how the word, and anti-oppression practice, relates to their work, activism, and life.

The first newsletter will focus on “movement.” Stay tuned for the release of Provocations & Practice in early October.
