CUASA Statement on International Day of Pink
The International Day of Pink was created in 2007 as a way to bring awareness to bullying and discrimination of all kinds, especially as it impacts the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. It was initially organized by two straight high school students who saw a gay student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. After intervening, they decided to bring more attention to the issue by inviting classmates to wear pink shirts to show solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and to stand up against homophobic and transphobic bullying. 850 students out of a school of 1,000 wore pink shirts as a result. Soon, the movement had spread to other schools across Canada and eventually it also gained recognition internationally.
Today, and every day, we encourage you to think about ways you can stand up against bullying, transphobia, and homophobia. That might mean having difficult conversations with others, examining your own internalized biases, or educating the people around you. Whatever that action looks like for you, we hope today can be a starting point so that you can bring it forward with you in all aspects of your life.
