Weekly Update – May 6, 2022

Spring/Summer COVID Measures

The University’s updated COVID measures for the spring/summer term took effect this week. As a reminder for CUASA members, Carleton will be maintaining the mandatory COVID-19 Mask Policy until further notice. Masks must be worn in all indoor university facilities including shared offices, meeting spaces, athletics facilities, classrooms and labs.

We encourage all CUASA members to read and become familiar with the updated measures, particularly if you are participating in on-campus activities.

In particular, CUASA members should also be aware that university-related travel (including research and fieldwork) may resume as per normal (pre-COVID19) travel approval processes. The University still recommends caution when considering any university-related travel.

Annual Tenure/Confirmation and Promotion Workshops

Each spring CUASA presents Tenure/Confirmation and Promotion workshops, which cover the process for applying for tenure/confirmation and/or promotion, the preparation of dossiers, and the appeals process in the event of a denial.

The dates and times for this year’s workshops are as follows:

All workshops will be held virtually on Zoom. Click on the dates above to register for the workshop you would like to attend.

Instructor Drop-in Meeting

CUASA is holding a drop-in meeting for Instructor members on Tuesday, May 10, from 2:00-3:30pm. All Instructors are encouraged to attend for a discussion on professional development and other topics. Registration is required.

Caucus Groups

CUASA is expanding our caucus model and we are looking for volunteers who are interested in the following groups:

  • Trans and Nonbinary Caucus: All trans, nonbinary, Two-Spirit (and/or Indigenous trans and nonbinary people), and other gender diverse CUASA members are welcome. The next meeting will be May 24th from 3:00pm – 4:30pm.
  • The Anti-Racism Working Group: Any CUASA member interested in addressing the issue of racism at Carleton is invited to join. We are planning on having the next meeting in late August unless anything urgent comes up over the summer which needs our attention.
  • CUASA is also interested in setting up a caucus for women and all people who have lived experiences of misogyny. The first meeting will be scheduled based on availability of those interested in participating.

If you’re interested in joining or would like more information, please contact Max López (Research Officer for Equity) at [email protected].

Member Engagement Survey

Our officers and staff want to ensure that CUASA members are provided access to services that help support them better. We appreciate your help in identifying how the Association can best meet your needs at Carleton by participating in occasional surveys.

We have developed this short on-line survey to learn more about the needs and preferences of our members across the university, based on recent questions and feedback from our membership. It should take you 5-8 minutes to complete.

This survey is anonymous unless you provide contact information for a follow-up conversation with a member of CUASA’s Internal Affairs Committee. Only the Internal Affairs committee will see individual responses. A composite summary of responses will be provided to CUASA’s Steering Committee and Council with all identifying information removed.

The survey will remain open until May 31, 2022.

Updated Constitution Available

As announced last week, all of the proposed revisions to the CUASA Constitution passed. The updated version of the Constitution incorporating the new revisions is now available on the CUASA website.

Academic Community Updates

New resource recommends strategies for enhancing collegial governance

The OCUFA University Governance Committee has published “Strategies for Enhancing Collegial Governance and Effectiveness in Governance Spaces.” The resource provides concrete and practical strategies and tactics for addressing barriers to collegial governance and faculty engagement in university governing bodies.

As traditional processes of shared collegial governance are becoming increasingly threatened or ignored, this document aims to provide faculty and academic librarians associations and their members with concrete steps to defend against threats to shared governance at Ontario’s universities.

CAUT welcomes new leadership

CAUT elected new leadership at its 92nd Council meeting, a hybrid in-person and online meeting held in Ottawa last week.

“We are coming out of the pandemic stronger than ever, having learned through six recent strikes the importance of solidarity,” said Peter McInnis, CAUT’s newly elected President, and a professor of history at St-Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. “Post-secondary education is worth fighting for—not only for our profession, but for the future of our country and our democracy. This a moment of opportunity, and we should embrace it.”

Labour Community Updates

Canada’s unions: Protect our public institutions

Canada’s unions are asking the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry to ensure no other publicly funded institutions follow in the footsteps of Laurentian University and file for bankruptcy.

“When Laurentian University declared bankruptcy, it pulled critical education programs out of Sudbury and its surrounding communities.” said Lily Chang, Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress. “A university like Laurentian provides jobs, education and opportunities for a community to progress towards a better future. The federal government must act now to ensure no other publicly funded institutions follow in Laurentian’s footsteps.”

Send a letter to the Minister and urge him to ensure that no other publicly funded institutions follow in the footsteps of Laurentian University.
