Province won’t seek to appeal Bill 124 decision
February 13, 2024
Yesterday, we shared the news that the Ontario Court of Appeal had dismissed the provincial government’s appeal of the Protecting a Sustainable Public Sector for Future Generations Act, commonly referred to as Bill 124.
Today, we are pleased to share that the province has confirmed that it will not seek leave to further appeal its fight against Ontario workers to the Supreme Court of Canada, and will instead be taking steps to repeal Bill 124 in its entirety in the coming weeks.
This means that we now have a final decision rendered on Bill 124, which was a precondition set out in the collective agreement for the negotiations on retroactive increases, unless otherwise agreed by both parties.
With the province now having confirmed it will not move forward with an attempted appeal and will instead repeal Bill 124, CUASA will soon be providing official notice to the University of its intent to begin negotiations on retroactive increases for May 1, 2021, to April 30, 2024, which was the three-year period capped by the bill.
As always, we will share further information with members as it becomes available.
