Support following False Alarm on Campus

Last week, an alert was issued of an active attacker on campus. This was later announced to have been a false alarm, triggered when the wrong computer key was hit when Carleton’s Emergency Notification System was being updated. Carleton plans to research the possibility of adding another step to the process required to send an ENS message to ensure no future false alarms happen. CUASA members who are having difficulties or are in need of assistance can contact the Employee Assistance Program at (613) 725-5676.

Ontario Government’s Tuition, Funding and OSAP Changes

On January 17, the Ontario Government announced a number of changes to the province’s postsecondary education sector, including a ten-percent reduction in tuition for domestic students, but no increase in operational grant funding to universities. The announcement also included a rollback of non-repayable grants for low-income students and a new initiative to make certain student fees optional that could threaten organizations like student unions. You can read CUASA’s full statement on these changes here.

NDP MPP Chris Glover, who is the Official Opposition Critic for Colleges and Universities, will be paying a visit to Carleton next Wednesday, February 13, where he will speak about these changes at the CUASA Council meeting. MPP Glover will be here from 2:00-2:50pm in 4351 Herzberg Laboratories. CUASA members are welcome to attend.
