The Carleton University Academic Staff Association (CUASA) is the certified trade union representing over 950 faculty, instructors, and professional librarians at Carleton University. Originally founded in 1952 and certified in 1975, the Association is the oldest union for academic staff in Ontario.

CUASA is seeking a Research Officer (Equity) on a one-year limited term appointment to assist with advising, developing, and coordinating resources and initiatives related to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). The ideal candidate has completed at least one graduate degree in social sciences or humanities. We are looking for someone with significant experience with EDI issues, is well organized and able to work independently with strong research, writing and data analysis skills, and who is familiar with or has experience in the labour movement.

The qualifications of the Research Officer (Equity) are:

  1. A graduate degree in social sciences or humanities
  2. Significant experience related to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and EDI issues
  3. Significant qualitative and quantitative research skills
  4. Familiarity or experience in the labour movement or community organizing
  5. Superior interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)

The starting salary for this position is $77,830.00 per annum. The Association also provides a competitive benefit and pension plan. This position is a unionized position and governed by the UNIFOR 567-CUASA 2021-2024 collective agreement.

Job Description: Research Officer (Equity)

The Research Officer (Equity) will be responsible for completing the following tasks under the direction of the CUASA Director and in collaboration with the Equity Committee in their work on initiatives related to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at CUASA:

  • Conducting research related to CUASA’s equity-related initiatives.
  • Post-bargaining transition processes.
  • Providing support to the Association’s committees, including attending meetings when asked, collecting data, conducting research, and otherwise helping to implement initiatives of these committees, when delegated to do so by the President or in collaboration with the relevant Chairs. This will require both qualitative and quantitative research skills and a conversancy with Nvivo software.
  • Coordinating with and assisting CUASA’s MSCO in making equity-related information publicly available on the Association’s website.
  • Temporarily performing the duties and responsibilities of other staff when required.
  • Engaging in professional development activities to enhance their ability to serve the membership.
  • Any other duty that the President may request.
