CUASA Statement on Provincial Government Changes
CUASA recently issued a statement expressing concern about provincial government changes to the postsecondary sector, such as reducing compensation to senior faculty who are receiving pensions, or possible interferences on university autonomy by changing collective bargaining across the sector. Town Hall for CUASA Members
We will be holding a Town Hall to discuss the changes mentioned above, what we know about them, what we don’t know, as well as possible means to address these attacks on our sector (including possible legal challenges). The Town Hall will be held on Tuesday, June 4 from 1:30-3:00pm in 210 Tory Building. Light refreshments will be provided. All CUASA members are welcome.
June 7 Day of Action
June 7 marks one year since the Ford government was elected. The Ontario Federation of Labour has organized a Day of Action to protest against the provincial government’s cuts, with numerous events happening across the province. Here in Ottawa, three main events are planned, including a rally and barbecue at Preston Square outside the Ministry of Labour building. We will be providing a bus for CUASA members to attend. The bus will depart from Parking Lot 1 beside the library at 11:30am, and will depart Preston Square to return to Carleton at 1:30pm. Space on the bus will be first-come, first-serve. We will also have posters and flags available for the rally. If you can’t make the rally, we have received word the Association of Professors of University of Ottawa (APUO) is sending members to the 4:00pm march to the Ottawa Courthouse. We encourage you to join APUO’s efforts, if you can.
Nominations for Vacant Positions
The following Steering positions are currently vacant, or will be as of July 1, 2019 (click the title to see position descriptions):
- Instructor Representative (two-year term, 2019-2021)
- Treasurer (two-year term, 2019-2021)
- Communications Officer (two-year term, 2019-2021)
- Chair, Equity (two-year term, 2019-2021)
- Chair, Nominations and Elections (two-year term, 2019-2021; note that there is a 0.5 credit teaching release added for this term)

Our Association is only as strong as its membership, so we count on the time and commitment of our members to achieve our goals. The Collective Agreement recognizes CUASA work as Service in members’ annual reviews. CUASA may purchase teaching releases under Article 18.8(c), subject to budget availability, and application to/approval by the Steering committee.
Call for Volunteers: Collective Bargaining Committee
We are in the early stages of preparing for the 2021 of bargaining. The first step in this process is populating the members of the Collective Bargaining Committee, whose term will begin July 1, 2019. Members of the CBC will begin by preparing for the launch of our pre-bargaining survey a year from now, followed by preparation of our bargaining demands. CUASA Office Summer Hours
Please note the CUASA Office closes at 12:00pm on Fridays from Victoria Day to the end of August. No services will be provided during this time. Regular hours from 9:00-4:30pm remain in effect for Monday to Thursday.
