Know Your Rights: CDI Criteria
In developing CDI criteria, members are reminded that under the new CA Article 39.2(a)(i), departments establish their own procedure and criteria to suit their own needs:
Recommendations with regard to the denial, in exceptional cases, of career development increments shall be made according to procedures established by each department to suit its own needs. Such procedures, including the criteria to be used, shall be communicated to all members of the academic unit.
CUASA’s position is that the employer cannot reject CDI criteria, nor can it require that any particular metrics be included in the criteria. The criteria must only be consistent with the collective agreement, and article 39 does not require metrics to be used.
If the university takes issue with CDI criteria established by your department, please report the situation to CUASA as soon as possible. We also recommended, if you can, to discuss the situation with the member of CUASA Council for your unit. See the list here.
Know Your Rights: Arranging Vacation Periods
A reminder that under article 18.8 of the collective agreement members are required to arrange their vacation period with their chair/director or equivalent.
Article 18.8(c) states:
Employees shall arrange their vacation period(s) in consultation with their department Chair/Director or equivalent. Every effort shall be made to comply with employees’ requests in scheduling annual leave with due regard to the continued effective functioning of the academic program and the needs of students. In the case of Faculty and Faculty, Teaching Stream employees, the Chair/Director shall provide the appropriate Dean with a schedule indicating when employees will be on vacation.
If you attempt to arrange your vacation period and you are denied, please contact CUASA for consultation.
