Solidarity with CUPE 4600
Our colleagues at CUPE 4600 have announced a strike deadline for both Unit 1 (Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants) and Unit 2 (Contract Instructors) for Monday, March 27.
CUPE 4600 members voted overwhelmingly in favour of striking, if necessary, but we hope that job action can be avoided by encouraging the University to seriously engage with CUPE 4600’s proposals and prevent a disruption to the academic year in the interest of students, faculty, and staff.
CUASA stands in strong solidarity with our CUPE 4600 colleagues. At its meeting last Thursday, March 16, CUASA Council passed the following motion:
Whereas CUPE 4600 is seeking a fair deal with the Employer;
And whereas the work of Teaching Assistants, Research Assistants, and Contact Instructors bears directly on CUASA members and on the quality of education and research on campus;
And whereas CUASA wishes to avoid any prolonged interruption of the academic year;
Be it resolved that Council issue a statement of solidarity with CUPE 4600, and vows to support to the fullest any demonstration or labour action they deem necessary to achieve a fair deal.
We implore Carleton University to offer CUPE 4600 members a fair deal and prevent a strike. We also encourage CUASA members to show your support for CUPE 4600 by sending an email to the University administration.
