Statement on World Refugee Day
June 20, 2023
Today, June 20th, marks World Refugee Day. On this day, we, as a community, come together to acknowledge the experiences of refugees around the globe and bring awareness to the struggles they face. According to statistics from the United Nations, “every minute 20 people leave everything behind to escape war, persecution, or terror.” As educators, we are aware that 43% of refugee children don’t have a school. As unionists, we believe that all efforts aiding refugees should be first and foremost shaped by refugees themselves.
Scholars at Risk (SAR) is a community that has been active at Carleton since 2014, which has been hosting academics from other countries who have had to flee due to threats to their lives, often as a consequence of their scholarship. To find out more about Carleton’s chapter of Scholars at Risk, please visit their website and check out their Annual Reports.
Currently donations in support of Scholars at Risk are being matched dollar-for-dollar by Carleton University. You can get involved and donate on the Future Funder website. CUASA is proud to support Scholars and Risk, and we hope many of you will as well.
